Preventing Workplace Pests: What You Can Do

About Me
eliminating the pests in your home

Ants, spiders, fleas, mice and silverfish were all problems in my house at one point. When we bought the house, it hadn't been lived in for about three years. Since it was basically abandoned, the pests moved in and made it their homes. The first few months of battling with these pests was the hardest. We had so many different pests to contend with that it was hard to know where to start. With the help of a professional pest control technician, we have taken our home back from those pests and have been living pest free ever since. Preventing Workplace Pests: What You Can Do

Pests anywhere aren't any fun no matter where you are, but when they start invading your workspace, it can be even more daunting. Ants crawling across your keyboard or mouse droppings near the coffee pot is not something you want to be seeing in the workplace. When you spot these things, it's best to report them to a supervisor so a commercial pest control company can be called to handle the situation before it worsens. To help prevent workplace pests there are things you can do. Read on for helpful tips.

Eat In Designated Areas

Eating at your desk and working through your lunch may seem like a good idea at the time, but you may end up leaving behind crumbs and food particles that mice, roaches and ants can feed off of. If you do eat at your desk, be sure to thoroughly clean up after yourself and wipe up spills. Be sure to toss any leftovers in the lunch area rather than in your desk trash can. Also, make sure garbage cans are being emptied throughout the week, not just one day per week.

Clean Up

In workplace lunch rooms or in the coffee room, be sure the area remains clean. Wipes and cleaning products should be readily available to clean up if need be. Coffee, sugar and any other spills should be cleaned up immediately, and pay attention to anything that falls to the floor as well. A broom should also be nearby with a dustpan so you can clean up. Coffee pots should be cleaned out thoroughly at the end of the day.

Use Sealed Containers

Any food left at work should be placed in sealed containers. This includes sugar, powdered creamer and other food items that pests may be attracted to. Sealed containers help hold in smells and prevent some pests from getting inside.

Report Pests Immediately

If you spot any pests, be sure to report them immediately to a supervisor. Don't attempt to kill the pests you see and then fail to report it to anyone. There may be more than just those few pests you killed. Other pests may also be invading your workplace, so even if you only see ants, you may also have mice and other pests as well. Mice can attract other pests which will feed off of their droppings.

If you notice pests in your workplace, report it immediately so a commercial pest control company like American Pest Professionals can come out and get rid of them properly
